WhY is our pto learning about Integrating Restorative Practices?

A Message from Your PTO:

Parenting a middle schooler in this current time is complicated.

We have probably all heard our children lament the negativity they hear and experience in school. The fights, disrespect between staff and students, bullying, and worse. Traditional punitive responses do not address the underlying causes of the unwanted behaviors.

The North Clackamas School District, and specifically our Alder Creek Middle School, are recognizing they need to ensure our young people feel valued, loved and heard by staff and one another. Developing a culture of Restorative Practices within each school community seeks to develop accountable, invested young people who can appropriately care for their own well-being, while demonstrating empathy towards others. Through this multi-year process, staff and students will both learn how to better engage for healthier outcomes.

School Administration and your PTO want to help ensure families are included in this process. The PTO will work with ACMS and the district, so families understand the changes as the school develops and implements Restorative Practices.  With shared language and understanding of the big picture goals, families are enabled to have more productive and informative conversations with both our children and school staff.

When our child participates in unexpected behaviors or is on the receiving end of such behaviors; we will be able to better support their personal healing and growth, along with repairing the relationships at school. The goal of Restorative Practices is for everyone involved to more successfully move forward, both as individuals and as a community.

If you would like to work with the PTO and school staff as these processes develop, consider joining the Restorative Practices Subcommittee (details below).  You can also follow here for updates or come to a PTO meeting.  PTO General meetings are Second Mondays, 6:15-7:45 at the school library and on Zoom. Feel free to join our PTO email list to receive notifications of upcoming PTO opportunities.
